Whether you are the pastor of a church, the leader of a ministry or a concerned believer, the subject of church growth is one that is of great importance to you.
Although there are a thousand and one strategies for growing a church or Christian organizations, nothing beats winning new people to Christ as a congregation.
So how do churches that grow consistently do it? How do they get to win more and more people while the rest barely manage to keep the members they have for years?
In this post, I will share three common practices of soul winning churches and give my advice on how you can implement the same as well.
What Soul Winning Churches Do Differently
- Pray For The Unsaved
This is where it all begins friends. If you truly want to see people saved and come to Christ, you have to start on your kneels. You have to be willing to spend time interceding for these people that they come to Christ.
The reason this is important is that these souls are very important and valuable to God and the least you can do to prove your worthiness to be the instrument to reach them is to be genuinely concerned for them.
This concern is demonstrated in your willingness to bring strong petitions before the Father on their behalf.
In Psalm 2:8, the scripture says something really interesting.
Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. (Psalm 2:8)
God wants you to ask and just for doing so, He guarantees to deliver the nations to you. He only requests that you show some concern upfront and pray.
Actually, if you can't pray for the salvation of a people, you probably aren't qualified to have them because salvation is only a means to an end not the end in itself. It is only the beginning of a lifelong journey of self-discovery in Christ.
So if you can't be committed to the beginning of the process, why should God trust you with the entire deal?Paul the apostle puts it more succinctly when he said:
My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you. (Gal 4:19)
Bible teachers agree that the expression "travail in birth" must refer to the investment of prayer for the Galatians. However, I will like for you to note the use of the word "again" in this scripture.
This presupposes that Paul must have prayed for them before. So Paul isn't only committed to praying for them until their come to Christ, he is going to go all out until Christ is formed in them (which by the way is a whole different ball game)
So pastors, leaders and believers, our travailing in prayer is the beginning step to becoming effective in leading people to Christ.
For a congregation to be effective in carrying out the great commission, the pastor and leadership have to burn with a passion for souls but they must communicate that fire to the members too.
It is not enough for a pastor to be on fire for souls, he can't achieve much as one man. But when he gets only 50% of his congregation to join in that passion, the results can be overwhelming!Hence, incorporating prayer sessions where you lead the congregation to pray for the unsaved is absolutely valuable.

2. Encourage Members To Win And Invite People
Sadly, here is where most leaders begin from and that is why they don't see as much result as they would have desired.
There is something about spending time to pray for unbelievers that opens up special doors and prepares you to get better results on the job.
So while praying, you should begin to encourage members to win others. Teach about it and design special programs to inspire them to get the job done.
Please note that there is a difference between winning souls and inviting new people to the church. The fact that you have 100 visitors in a month doesn't mean you had 100 converts that month.
In fact, more often than not, more than half of those who visit your church at any given point in time will be believers from other churches and denominations. Hence, you need to set up a structure for turning every unbeliever who visits into a believer.
One of my practices is to find out an area of life that my community suffers the most. Knowing that at least half the people in my community are unbelievers, I create a program or series of programs to tackle those areas.
That often draws the attention of people suffering in that area and in most cases, about half of them are unbelievers. We can then build on that relationship and gradually lead them to Christ down the road.
